The Road To Nowhere In Particular

Road Trips — notes from a mountain pass in Ladakh, and why the bike matters less than the stop.

The Road To Nowhere In Particular

There's a stretch of road in Ladakh where the mountains change colour depending on where the sun is — rust in the morning, a kind of bruised gold by early afternoon. There's no real reason to stop anywhere specific along it. Every few kilometres looks like the best view of the trip until the next one shows up. Eventually you just stop when you stop, which is usually when the bike needs a break more than you do.

Dunes Maroon ended up on the ground in that exact spot, propped against gravel with a loaded motorcycle behind it, and it stayed the reference photo for the whole Chapter afterward — not because the light was perfect, but because it was the first stop that didn't feel like it was for a photo.

If you're planning something similar: give yourself more days than you think you need. The Inner Line Permit stops matter, the altitude sickness is real above 4,000m, and the best hour of light shows up whenever it wants, not on your schedule.

This is a trip where the practical advice is unusually load-bearing. June to September is the realistic window before passes close. Acclimatise for a day in Leh before pushing up toward Khardung La — altitude doesn't care how fit you are. Layers matter more than any single heavy jacket, since a 30-degree swing between sunrise and midday is normal, not an exception.

A cap earns its keep here in a specific way: full sun at altitude with thin air means the glare off pale rock is meaner than it looks, and a real brim matters more than sunglasses alone. Dunes Maroon and Travaholic Snow both made this trip for that reason, one for the desert-toned lower passes, one for wherever the road climbs into actual snow.

The road doesn't need an itinerary. It needs fuel, permits sorted in advance, and the willingness to stop at the gravel patch that doesn't look like anything special until you're standing in it.
